Caring for pets brings joy and companionship, especially for seniors. Yet many older adults face challenges in accessing veterinary care due to cost and transportation barriers. In Grand Rapids, a unique partnership between Vetr Health and Tyson’s Place Animal Rescue is changing that reality. By bringing veterinary services directly into seniors’ homes, this collaboration is improving the health of pets and the well-being of their owners.

Making Veterinary Care Accessible for Seniors
Many seniors love their pets deeply but struggle to provide proper care. Traditional vet visits can be stressful or impossible due to mobility issues, lack of transportation, or financial constraints. Recognizing these challenges, Vetr Health and Tyson’s Place Animal Rescue joined forces with a clear mission: to remove these barriers and ensure seniors can keep their pets healthy.
Tyson’s Place provides funding through a private donation to cover the cost of in-home veterinary visits for seniors aged 65 and older. Vetr Health delivers these visits, bringing medical care directly to the pets’ homes. This approach eliminates two major obstacles at once:
No need for seniors to travel with their pets
No financial burden for veterinary services
This model not only improves access but also reduces stress for both pets and their owners.
The Story of Jaxson and the “Golden Girls”
At the Breton Village Green Apartments, the impact of this partnership became clear through the story of Charlyn and her dog, Jaxson. Jaxson is a 14-year-old Australian Shepherd mix living with congestive heart failure. Before Vetr Health’s involvement, managing his condition was difficult. Trips to the vet were hard on Jaxson and Charlyn, and consistent care felt out of reach.
One in-home visit changed everything. Funded by Tyson’s Place, Vetr Health provided Jaxson with the medications he needed for his heart and lungs, all without leaving home. This care improved his quality of lif.
Word spread quickly among neighbors. Soon, a group of seniors receiving these visits formed a close-knit community affectionately called the “Golden Girls” by the Vetr Health team. They share stories, support each other, and celebrate the improved health of their pets.

How This Model Benefits Seniors and Their Pets
This partnership offers several clear benefits:
Convenience: Seniors receive care without leaving their homes, reducing stress for pets and owners.
Affordability: Tyson’s Place covers the cost, removing financial barriers.
Community Impact: The program fosters connections among seniors, reducing isolation.
Health Improvements: Pets receive timely care, improving their longevity and comfort.
For seniors, pets often provide emotional support and companionship. Keeping pets healthy supports seniors’ mental and physical well-being. This program recognizes that connection and works to preserve it.
Expanding the Reach and Inspiring Others
The success at Breton Village Green Apartments shows how targeted support can transform lives. The “Golden Girls” group is a testament to what happens when care meets compassion. This model could inspire other communities to adopt similar programs, helping seniors nationwide keep their pets healthy and close.
Veterinary care is essential, but it should never be out of reach. By removing barriers, Vetr Health and Tyson’s Place are creating a ripple effect of care that strengthens bonds between seniors and their pets.
